Greece has become the first majority-Orthodox Christian nation to legalize same-sex marriage under civil law. Public opinion in majority Orthodox countries has mostly been opposed, too. Civil unions may become more common among Orthodox countries gravitating toward the European Union. Greek Orthodox showed relative tolerance, with half of Orthodox saying homosexuality should be accepted and a quarter favoring same-sex marriage. As head of the Russian Orthodox Church, he oversees the world's largest Orthodox flock.

The missiles got into Ukraine within the last few days, said one of the U.S. officials. Their arrival at the warfront gives Ukraine a critical ability to strike Russian targets that are farther away, allowing Ukrainian forces to stay safely out of range. Because of lingering U.S. concerns about escalating tensions with Russia, the ATACMS version that went to Ukraine will have a shorter range than the maximum distance the missiles can have. The small number of missiles underscores the U.S. reluctance to send the powerful weapons. In July, the U.S. agreed to send thousands of cluster bombs to Ukraine.

Ukraine is offering a 10% reward to whistleblowers who report corruption, local media reported. Ukrainians rank corruption as the country's biggest problem after the war, surveys have found. The country's National Agency of Corruption Prevention announced on Tuesday that it is to launch a public platform, providing a digital portal for people to report suspected corruption. This reward — up to a maximum of 14 million hryvnias ($380,000) — would be the first-ever whistleblower reward offered in Ukraine, the outlet reported. The European Union has long emphasized that tackling corruption is a key condition to Ukraine being able to join.

The president last month announced plans to audit military draft offices to try to eliminate corruption. "Let me warn all members of parliament, officials and everyone working as a civil servant," he said. "No one will forgive members of parliament, judges, military officials or any other officials for placing themselves in opposition to the state." CORRUPTION, TREASON CHARGESEarlier, legal authorities said the head of a military recruitment centre in southern Ukraine accused of corruption and embezzlement had been ordered held in pre-trial detention, with bail set at the equivalent of just over $4 million. And the prosecutor general's office said parliamentarian Oleksandr Ponomaryov, suspected of collaborating with Russia in the occupied southeast, had been arrested pending trial on treason charges.

Igor Novikov, the founder of Cancel Kouture, told Insider the shirts approach opinions with humor. "At the moment, we're donating to resilience centers and the charities that are directly supporting people in need," he told Insider. "And I realized that it must've been Fox News, and it must've been Tucker," Novikov said. And Novikov said while Cancel Kouture gets its namesake from the phenomenon of "canceling" someone, it's also more lighthearted. "I'm not a huge fan of cancel culture because, to me, it seems too aggressive and too indiscriminate," Novikov told Insider.
According to Transparency International's 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index, Ukraine ranked slightly better than Russia but still well below the global average. Their focus also shows civil society is embracing its role as a government watchdog even as the war grinds on. Many journalists are also turning their attention to uncovering Russian war crimes and assets in Ukraine. PUBLIC PARTNERSHIPSuch reports play a key role in Ukraine's fledgling anti-corruption system, created after the 2014 Maidan revolution toppled pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych. Romaniuk, director of the Institute of Mass Information, an NGO in Kyiv, said Ukrainian journalists' role as anti-corruption activists will become increasingly important as Kyiv maps out a more transparent future.
Two captured Wagner Group fighters say the company hired convicts as long as they could march a few yards. Both Russian fighters told CNN they were serving prison sentences when the Wagner Group approached them in September and August, offering six-month contracts in exchange for pardons. The pair said Prigozhin told them they would be stationed on the second line of defense on Russia's front, per CNN. Similar reports previously emerged of Russian reservists dying by the hundreds from Ukrainian shelling and of Wagner Group recruits being executed for refusing to participate in suicide charges. "Those who disobey are eliminated — and it's done publicly," Yevgeny Novikov, a former inmate recruited by Wagner, told the Russian independent outlet Poligon Media.
Captured members of a Russian mercenary group say disobedient troops and deserters are being publicly executed in Ukraine. The infamous Wagner Group has recruited prisoners to fight on the front lines. One captured former inmate described many of the recruited prisoners as "completely insane." The Russian military has suffered staggering losses since Moscow launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine last February. In an effort to address worsening manpower issues, the Wagner Group has fought alongside the Russian military and has recruited Russian prisoners in the process.
A chain of new donut shops called Krunchy Dream has sprung up in Russia, where Krispy Kreme once stood. They are owned by the Novikov Group, whose owner Arkady Novikov is Krispy Kreme's only former franchisee in Russia. It then proceeded to shutter all Russian Krispy Kreme shops. Krispy Kreme said in its second-quarter earnings results release that it had closed 30 franchise shops in Russia. Krispy Kreme and the Novikov Group did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment which were sent outside regular business hours.
In the dark, Ukrainian restaurants serve customers by candlelight with special 'blackout menus'. Kyiv-based restaurant manager Dmytro Tkachenko told Insider: "We can adapt to anything." He's visited several restaurants during blackouts, and told Insider that the atmosphere is "completely unique." A post shared by Under Wonder (@underwonder.kyiv)Manager Dmytro Tkachenko told Insider it has designed a reduced — but still "exquisite" — array of dishes that can be prepared without electricity. He told Insider: "What you see develop in Ukraine under these harsh circumstances will be the new normal everywhere."
Soon after Russia launched what it calls a "special military operation" in Ukraine, Krispy Kreme suspended all shipments of doughnut making supplies and ingredients to Russia and ended the agreement with its lone Russian franchisee.
